Sticky Wilds, Expanding Wilds, Scatters Symbols and Other Symbols Explained

Added: December 26, 2012

Almost every online slot machine today, in particular video slots, have more than just the standard symbols on the reels. These other symbols that can help boost your balance or trigger mini bonus rounds mainly include Scatter Symbols, Wild Symbols and Bonus Symbols.

Depending on which software provider has developed the video slot that you are playing on will determine the actual types of symbols that are available. A standard Wild Symbol though is generally called a Wild Symbol wherever you are playing and it will perform the same actions on whichever slot you are playing on.

Wilds basically act as substitute symbols or mirror symbols. They will generally substitute themselves for most other regular symbols on the reels to help generate line wins that otherwise weren’t there.

They basically form winning paylines and they usually DON’T substitute Bonus Symbols or the Scatter Symbols. However there are some online slots where the Wild Symbols do actually substitute ALL symbols, including the Scatters and Bonus Symbols.

Expanding Wilds perform similar actions, but when they appear they generally stretch from the top of the reel right the way down to the bottom reel, so they are covering the entire reel. These awesome symbols are otherwise known as Stacked Wilds.

Sometimes Wild Symbols do not actually have a value of their own, but on most video slots, these are quite often the highest paying symbols. If five of these are to appear along one of the active paylines, you will generally receive the slot's top prize.

One of the other main types of symbols that you are likely to come across is the Scatter Symbol. Scatter Symbols generally do not need to be connected via a payline and they can usually appear in any position across the reels. They can also trigger certain bonus games, such as a Free Spins bonus round.

The last notable symbols that are present on many of today’s video slots are the Bonus Symbols. These may also have to appear in a certain order to trigger the main bonus feature, but on some slots they may only need to appear in any random position across the reels, but you will usually need a minimum of three symbols (both Scatters and Bonus) before a bonus round is automatically activated.

There are numerous other symbols that have slowly started making an appearance into the modern online slot machine, so check back here regularly to learn some more online slots terminology.
